It’s a bit hard for me to comprehend that it is already October. What a crazy year! October is my favorite month. I love the fall weather, everything pumpkins, and Halloween. Aiden was introduced to Mario Kart this year so naturally, he wanted to dress up as Mario with Nolan as his Luigi. As always, I like to make the boys costumes with things they can use again so I started planning. Here is how I made a Mario and Luigi costume for siblings with things we had or will use again.
Mario and Luigi Costume for Siblings
I shopped for red and green t-shirts from Primary because they have great basics in the perfect colors. They also had hats in the exact colors of the t-shirts, so even though they aren’t the same style hats Mario and Luigi wear, they are the right color and I think people will get the point — plus it’s perfect for Halloween night which can be chilly. I found basic knit white winter gloves (which of course, I forgot to put on them when I took the pictures ::facepalm::). All of these items can be used as basics this winter.
Next, I got basic denim overalls. I found a style that came in a light and dark wash so they would match. These boots are perfect for the fall and for these Mario and Luigi costumes.
I found Mario and Luigi patches on Etsy to add to the hats from Primary. To make the hats, I sewed the patches on the hats. It was just a wide, basic stitch. Once they are done with the costume I plan to remove the patches so they can use the hats for winter.
The finishing touch was the mustache which I just used eyeliner and drew one on. It was much easier to draw a mustache on Aiden than Nolan š
Mario and Luigi Costume — Treat Bags
I usually try to incorporate the treat bag into the costume. I don’t always make the bags, but I couldn’t find anything I loved that really related to Mario and Luigi. I decided to make a mushroom and star bag.
Supplies:
- Felt (Red, Yellow, White, Black)
- Scissors
- Blank Bags
- Glue Gun
- Cotton Balls or Pillow Batting (I used cotton balls since I had them at home)
- Marker
Instructions (Star):
- Put two pieces of yellow felt together and draw a star.
- Cut along the lines to create your star shape.
- Lightly add some cotton or pillow batting between the two pieces of felt.
- Glue the felt together.
- Fold a piece of white felt in half and draw a long oval.
- Cut along the lines to create two ovals.
- Fold a piece of black felt in half and draw a small circle.
- Cut along the lines to create two circles.
- Glue the black circles to the white ovals.
- Glue the white ovals to the star.
Instructions (Mushroom):
- Put two pieces of red felt together.
- Draw a half-circle and cut along the lines to create the top of your mushroom.
- Lightly add some cotton or pillow batting between the two pieces of felt.
- Glue the felt together.
- Glue the half-circle towards the top of the bag so it sticks up over the top of the bag a bit. The bag is the stem of the mushroom.
- Use a cup or coaster to trace three circles on white felt.
- Glue the circles on to the red mushroom top.
- Fold a piece of black felt in half and draw a long oval and cut along the lines to create two ovals.
- Glue the ovals to the bag under the red half-circle for eyes.
I think it came out super cute and Aiden was thrilled. He can’t wait for Halloween!
