Our Wobbly Waddler — Walking Baby

One of the most exciting milestones Aiden has achieved, for us, is walking. I will never forget the day he took his first steps and then a few days later was walking around the room with a little push car (which had absolutely no support so he was walking on his own and didn’t know it  ?)!  It’s a milestone that is very exciting, but also a little bittersweet and scary too. He is growing up so quickly and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. It’s funny, I remember thinking having a newborn was really hard, but it is nothing compared to a toddler who has new found freedom. This post is a little different as it serves several purposes — a celebration of Aiden’s milestone, some useful information about baby walking and shoes, and a giveaway from one of our favorite baby shoe companies, Wobbly Waddlers!

I have been planning for this post for a long time. We thought Aiden would be an early walker because he always liked to be on his feet and didn’t even really crawl. Of course, as with everything else we thought Aiden would be early with, he took his sweet time and did it when he was ready. There were several stages of waking.

  • Around six-months he liked us to hold his hands and walk him around.
  • A month or so later he was pulling himself
  • Shortly after that he would “cruise” along furniture
  • We got him a Dance Walker Activity Center walker to practice walking in
  • By nine months we had a sit-to-stand walker that he loved to walk around our townhouse and outside with

As he became more and more mobile I realized his soft soled “crib” shoes were not going to cut it anymore. Inside wasn’t a problem because babies learn to walk barefoot, but when he was outside, we wanted something that would help keep his balance and his feet protected. I was so fortunate to happen upon Adriana from the company Wobbly Waddlers. She makes the most amazing baby shoes for little walkers. Coincidentally, she also lives in the DC metro area so we are practically neighbors!  I gave her shoes a try and I am hooked — you have probably seen them on Aiden’s little feet in many pictures since about seven months.

Before babies are ready to walk, buying shoes is really easy because they don’t have to be functional. For pre-walkers, I love fabric booties and moccasins. I actually wrote a post about our favorite baby shoes before Aiden was walking here.  However, once the walking begins there are some things you need to keep in mind. The American Academy of Pediatrics gives the following guidance to buying shoes for toddlers:

  • Look for comfortable shoes with nonskid soles, such as sneakers, that will help keep your toddler steady.
  • Buy well-made shoes, but don’t spend a lot of money.
  • At this stage, your child’s feet grow so rapidly that the first pair of shoes won’t last more than 2 or 3 months.
  • You should check the fit about once a month; the top of your child’s big toe should be about a finger-width distance from the inside edge of the shoe. It’s better to have no shoes at all than shoes that are too tight.

The Wobbly Waddlers definitely meet these criteria. The shoes are made specifically for babies that are starting to walk and toddlers up to three years old.  The shape of the First Steps and Urban Models were designed in Spain by orthopedic pediatricians. The shoes provide the right arch and ankle support for developing feet. They are made with Nature Flex technology which is a flexible rubber sole that allows babies/toddlers to feel the ground under his or her feet.  The toes have rounded edges that mimic the natural shape of a child’s foot and help with heel stability. The shoes are all made with locally and sustainably sourced leather by artisans in Mexico which the Wobbly Waddler’s company is providing living wages and great work conditions to their employees which is always a great thing to know and support! There are many different styles and they are all really cute. The best thing is that they sell them on Amazon so if you are an Amazon Prime member you can get free two-day shipping.

Hi, I’m Melissa! I am a mama to an energetic preschooler and newborn, a wife to my amazing husband Dan, and I work full-time as a meeting planner. I started this blog because, after having my first little guy, I quickly learned that exhaustion and baby brain causes you to forget some of the amazing (sometimes horrible and sometimes wonderful) details related to the first several months of raising a baby. Realizing that we would probably have more kids in the future, I wanted to document everything, so we would remember what worked the first time around, and hopefully help other first time mamas along the way!
