While browsing the book store, Aiden discovered the story How to Catch a Leprechaun. When we finished reading he was intrigued by leprechauns so we found Pete the Cat: The Great Leprechaun Chase. One of my favorite family traditions growing up around St Patrick’s Day was building leprechaun traps with my brother and sister. When I told him I used to make traps to catch leprechauns when I was little, he was determined to show me that he would have better luck than the characters in both stories and I ever had with a trap of his own!

How to make a leprechaun trap with a preschooler
Ingredients
- Shoe Box
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Stickers (optional)
- Tape
Instructions

Cover the shoe box in paper (if it has a design on it).

Have your toddler decorate the box.

Set up the "trap" with a slight opening on a table.

On the night before St. Patrick's Day add chocolate coins or a shamrock to the trap.
When I was little, my mom always left a “gift” from the leprechaun so that we would know that he was there. It was usually a small shamrock or chocolate coins. Once Aiden goes to bed the evening before St Patrick’s Day, I plan to leave some chocolate coins for him.
This DIY Leprechaun Trap for Kids was the perfect craft for a cold winter afternoon. It kept my preschooler occupied for a little over an hour and it even helped reinforce some important developmental skills like eye hand coordination, creativity/imagination, and the concept of cause and effect. We even worked on letters.
