Do it Yourself (DIY) Baby Ball Pit

What kid doesn’t love a ball pit? I knew pretty early on that I wanted Aiden to have one. Ultimately I ended up with a fun do it yourself ball pitย  thanks to some help from my mom!

Originally, I considered the Infantino Grow-With-Me Activity Gym and Ball Pit. I was going to get it for Aiden for Christmas last year, but I didn’t and there wasn’t another occasion for me to purchase it for him. We try not to purchase toys when it is not a special occasion. He had the Kick and Play which is a similar idea so I couldn’t justify the cost.

My next thought was to create my own. I found this really cool tutorial online from one of my favorite mommy bloggers for a ball pit in a closet. But, there were two issues:

  1. We are currently renting our townhouse and can’t make any major changes.
  2. We could probably get past number one, but in our townhouse space is a premium. Even if we had an extra closet, I don’t think we would use it on a ball pit ๐Ÿ™

I still love the idea and maybe when we own a home I might do it.

I went back to the drawing board. Funny enough one day out of the blue I got a call from my mom. She told me she sent a large package and it was for Aiden, but it required some explaining. I didn’t think much of it, but when the package arrived and I opened it up imagine my delight to find the supplies to make my own ball pit!!!

How did I know what it was? I read these adorable directions.

This ball pit only requires two supplies and three steps, so it is fast and EASY. Here is how you can create a ball pit for your baby. It can also be cleaned up and stored easily.

Supplies:

  1. Inflatable two-ring pool (size 36x36x8)
  2. 200 crush proof plastic balls

Directions:

  1. Inflate the pool
  2. Dump the balls in
  3. Have fun!

I can’t tell you how much Aiden loves his ball pit. He likes to throw the balls, lay in the balls and cover himself with the balls. It’s the perfect size for him and fits in his play corner. Now that he is mobile, he crawls in and out of the ball pit. It’s just as great as I thought it would be…now if only I could jump in ๐Ÿ˜€

About Melissa

Hi, Iโ€™m Melissa! I am a mama to my baby Aiden Milo (born November 2015), and a police wife to my husband Dan. I started this blog because, after having Aiden, I quickly learned that exhaustion and baby brain causes you to forget some of the er-lovely (sometimes horrible and sometimes wonderful) details related to the first several months of raising a baby. Considering we may have more kids in the future, I want to document everything we do, so we remember what worked the first time around, and hopefully help other first time mamas along the way!

  • Meg

I have thought about doing something like this, but I have hesitated because I worry that the balls would just end up ALL over the house. DO you leave it out all the time, or do you put it away in between play sessions? How do you contain the mess?

    • Melissa

Hi Meg, good question! He does throw the balls out of the pool, but it’s usually no more than 5-6 balls and they are usually around the pool so I just clean them up at the end of the day when I straighten up all of his stuff. Occasionally I do find a random one somewhere though. I do leave it out, Aiden has a play corner with a rug so I try to contain his stuff (including the ball pit) to that corner.
