The first year of being a mom has been crazy! There are so many things I wish I would have known to better prepare for having a baby especially when it comes to baby gear. There are SO MANY things out there and unless you have been through it, it can be overwhelming to know what you really need. The things I used most often were the things that came highly recommended by my mama friends. Now that Aiden is almost a year, I will be sharing my ultimate first-year essentials. First up, the Zipadee-zip (referred to as ‘zippy’ in our house) by Sleeping Baby.
Disclosure: I received products in exchange for my honest review. However, I have purchased Sleeping Baby products in the past and love them!
Some babies have blankets, loveys, or pacifiers Aiden has a Zipadee-zip.
If you follow any of my “most used updates” posts you may have noticed that around month three I started talking about the Zipadee-zip and Aiden has used it just about every single day since. Just the sight of it is usually enough to calm him down during a fussy period. The Zipadee-zip was recommended to us by a friend who swore by it for a swaddle transition option. You may have read my post on how important swaddling was for us to keep Aiden happy, so it was a must-try for us. I love that it was created by a mom of a little girl who refused to sleep without being swaddled. Trust me a mom in that situation will find a solution!
The Zipadee-zip is meant for babies starting at three-months. We actually started a bit earlier and used it as a travel tool. We took several car and plane trips in the early months and we wanted something swaddle-like that would still be safe. With the Zipadee-zip you can still buckle a car seat or stroller so baby can stay warm and comfortable, but still be totally safe. It’s great for the air travel because planes are full of germs but when traveling in a Zipadee-zip Aiden was mostly covered so there was less of a chance of him picking something up. We also use it in the early spring and late fall when we go for our daily walks. Aiden doesn’t usually like a blanket covering his arms so we put it on him and he is nice and warm.
Aiden decided he no longer needed a tight swaddle to sleep when he was around 12 weeks old. However, he still had a startle reflex so putting him to sleep without a swaddle didn’t work. The Zipadee-zip was a perfect transitional swaddle. The slight resistance in the wing-span decreased the startle reflex and helped him self-soothe and sleep better. We did try some other popular sleep sack brands and Aiden did not fall asleep as quickly in those.
Especially in the early days (and, honestly, even now sometimes) we would pack the Zipadee-zip and bring it with us wherever we went just in case Aiden decided to have a melt-down. If that happened we would put him in his zippy and he would usually calm down pretty quickly. It is also excellent for the many doctor appointments in the first year. Especially on the days when Aiden got his vaccinations, the Zipadee-zip was such a comfort to him.
Aiden has always been an excellent sleeper and I credit some of that to the Zipadee-zip. We recently had to move to the next size up because even now at 11-months old, we use it as a sleep sack. He doesn’t need a blanket in his crib because he has the Zipadee-zip. At nap time, we put it on him and he is out. I usually get questions from people asking if Aiden can move around in it and he can! There is plenty of room to push-up, roll over and wiggle around safely. Aiden can even pull up to standing in his crib with it on.
I have owned three Zipadee-zips and can attest to the excellent quality and amazing customer service. Our first zippy developed a hole in the shoulder seam about a month after we started using it. I contacted customer service to see if they could do anything even though the return policy is within one month. I heard back that same day that they would replace the defective Zipadee-zip. Not only did they replace it, but I didn’t have to wait until I sent it back to them for them to ship it to me. They shipped the next day with a return envelope for me to return the defective product. I have not had any issues since. Considering we use this Every.Single.Day, that is amazing!
UPDATE: Aiden is still using his Zipadee-zip at 14 months. We believe is a safe alternative to using a blanket in his crib and he is still happily using it. I think pretty soon we might make the transition to a flying squirrel pj.
Sleeping baby doesn’t just make Zipadee-zips either. One thing I really love about this company is that they are constantly trying to make parenting easier. I jumped at the opportunity to try out their OneZ and Trendy Teethers. More about these products below.
I think most parents would sympathize with me on how difficult it is to deal with the snaps on rompers and pajamas. Sleeping Baby created a zipper inseam which is SO MUCH EASIER to manage when you have a wiggly baby. It also eliminates the every-day struggle I have with getting the snaps to match up correctly. It’s also warmer because there are no holes for air to get in. I wish I would have had a few of these in the early days and I will definitely stock up if (more like when) I have a second baby.
Aiden has been teething since five months (you can read about that here). It has been awful. Now that the teething tablets and gels have been recalled I have been relying more and more on silicon teething toys. I love the Sleeping Baby Trendy Teethers because they are bigger than most teething toys I have used. They are made from 100% non-toxic, BPA free soft silicon beads. They clip easily onto Aiden or his stroller or car seat. They are dishwasher safe which is fabulous! Most importantly they work. Aiden chews on it and has relief which is my greatest measure of success.
Needless to say, all of the Sleeping Baby products are must-adds to any registry list. Visit the Sleeping Baby website to look at all the great options and receive $2 off a Zipadee-zip with the promo code SLEEP.
