Small Shop Spotlight: Hudson Lillian Designs

Today I am highlighting Hudson Lillian Designs (HLD for short) an amazing graphic t-shirt shop with tees for the whole family owned by an incredible mama.

If you’ve been around for a bit you know how much I love supporting small shops. I love knowing that I am helping other mamas live their dreams by purchasing from them. Today I am highlighting Hudson Lillian Designs (HLD for short) an amazing graphic t-shirt shop with tees for the whole family owned by an incredible, funny, whiskey loving mama of two named Ashleigh. You may recognize her name because she contributed to my holiday stress post over the holidays last year!

Hudson Lillian Design features witty and bold tees that are hard not to love. Her brand is monochromatic so 95% of the tees are black (she did have a really awesome burgandy color shirt last Christmas that I love!) The black is great for moms and dads because, let’s face it, kids are messy. HLD is one of the few small shops that I can purchase tees for Dan. We can often be found wearing our HLD because everything is so comfortable and easy to wear. I love the mini-nado shirt for Aiden and when he turns two you will find him in a two-nado shirt for sure!

Not only are the shirts cute, but Ashleigh is an incredible person. I’ve gotten to know her over the last year and consider her a close friend. She is one of the nicest people I know. I’m not even sure I can adequately put into words how highly I think about her. She is the kind of person that would give you the shirt off her back without hesitation. She is a strong supporter of postpartum depression awareness after suffering from it herself. She donated proceeds from her After the Storm tee to the Always With Me Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to providing affordable postpartum doulas and education to pregnant women about PPD.

As a toddler mom I am looking for specific things when it comes to clothes. These are my toddler mom life summer style must haves.

I asked Ashleigh to share a little more about herself, her family, and her shop so readers can get a little behind the scenes look at the mama behind the shop.

1. Tell me a little bit about your background.

Hello world! I’m Ashleigh! I have dabbled in a little bit of everything before I figured out that I NEEDED to be a small business owner and make my own rules.
I initially wanted to be a police officer with my ultimate goal being state medical examiner. Both of those ended pretty quickly after I was a cadet for the department for a few years. Becoming a teacher was my next dream. It got interrupted by cosmetology school and being a professional make up artist. During all this discovery I also was a bartender and waitress. A few years later I went back to teaching; it was perfect or so I thought. I loved teaching. When I became a Mama I realized something; I needed to be home with my boy. And the beginning of HLD….

2. Why did you open Hudson Lillian Designs?

My family moved across the country when our oldest was 8 months old. I developed PPD and since we didn’t have any friends or family within 2,000 miles I became very lonely and completely isolated. I needed something to jump start my life again and something to give me purpose. HLD was that. It began as a burlap wreath and wooden sign store; fast forward two years and we are now a monochromatic graphic tee shop. When I decided to switch gears I realized I wanted to do good. I wanted to make a difference. I tried to think about what would have made my hardest days easier and that was just to have someone; anyone talk to me. I pride myself in designing tee shirts that start conversations. That make friends and that grow smiles. I hope one day the conversation in the aisles of Target can let a Mama talk about her rainbow baby, or the child they never hugged, all the tasks they have left for the day, or their favorite wine to deal with all their toddler’s whining. That’s my dream.

3. What is the meaning behind the name?

I created Hudson Lillian Designs to find myself and to be a better Mama to my sons. The name reflects just that. Our oldest middle name is Hudson- My favorite flower is a Lilly. I am currently in the process of coming up with a way to incorporate our youngest into the company name as well so we ‘may’ be due for some re-branding soon!

4. What is your favorite part about owning Hudson Lillian Designs?

The people. This may have been the easiest question to answer. I’ve met so many strong. incredible women since opening HLD. I’ve actually made life long friendships and I’m so blessed with the people who are in my corner. I couldn’t continue without my tribe.

5. Why should people shop small?

Shopping small is supporting a family directly. It’s helping a small business owner get their groove. Shopping small is so important because that Mama behind the shop is probably constantly thinking she’s failing. One purchase, one share, one like, one mention- could change her entire mindset. The best thing about shopping small if your contribution IS the difference for them.

You could not be supporting a better family by buying from HLD. I hope you will check out her tees and love them as much as we do. You can save 15% on the tees in her shop by using CASTAN15. There is some great stuff coming out for the fall ( I saw some sneak peaks) so you should join her VIP Facebook Group for sneak peaks and insider information and follow her on Instagram.

Hudson Lillian Design is also giving away a tank top to one Baby Castan on Board reader. You can enter using the RaffleCopter widget below. The giveaway ends on Friday, July 28.

Hi, I’m Melissa! I am a mama to an energetic preschooler and newborn, a wife to my amazing husband Dan, and I work full-time as a meeting planner. I started this blog because, after having my first little guy, I quickly learned that exhaustion and baby brain causes you to forget some of the amazing (sometimes horrible and sometimes wonderful) details related to the first several months of raising a baby. Realizing that we would probably have more kids in the future, I wanted to document everything, so we would remember what worked the first time around, and hopefully help other first time mamas along the way!
