It’s hard to believe Nolan has already been here for a month (plus a few days). We are still getting used to being a family of four, but I have to say the adjustment from one to two is SO much easier than the first.
This is Nolan’s one month old baby update.
Nolan is 9 lbs 9oz and 22 inches. He wears size newborn in clothes and diapers but is quickly growing out of them.
Breastfeeding has been going great so far. Nolan eats about every 2.5-3 hours. He was cluster feeding in the evening for the first couple of weeks, but that has slowed down (for now).
He has been gaining weight like a champ — which is something I am not used to. He was back to his birth weight within two weeks and is already 10lbs.
We introduced a bottle which went well. He ate a little fast so we will keep practicing.
At this stage, we don’t have a ton of milestones to report, but in the last week or so we’ve started to get baby smiles and cooing which is always adorable.
We have been very lucky in the sleep department. Nolan has been a good napper so far. We follow an eat, wake, sleep routine. Although the eat and wake are pretty much the same at this point. We do try to do a little tummy time here and there. We have been more relaxed about the schedule this time around and I found that Nolan just sort of fell into it naturally. Usually, we do our last feeding between 10:30 and 11:00 pm and then he sleeps until 2:30-3:00 am for a feeding and then he is up again between 5:00-6:00 am.
We’ve been trying to get out and about as much as possible. So far, Nolan has been to a Potomac Nationals (minor league) game, strawberry picking, Mother’s Day brunch, a few hikes, his newborn photoshoot, and lots of playgrounds (with Aiden). I carry him in a ring sling and he will usually sleep through whatever activity we are doing unless it’s time to eat.
The biggest challenge is getting used to having a warm weather baby. With Aiden it was cold so we did indoor things and could dress him up. With the weather getting hot it’s great to get outside, but harder to keep Nolan cool and out of the sun.
Of course, navigating Aiden’s adjustment and making sure he gets enough attention and doesn’t feel left out or jealous is also a concern.
Even though this is Nolan’s one month old baby update, I thought it would be important to share Aiden’s adjustment. Generally, Aiden has had a really good reaction to Nolan. He likes to tell people that he is a big brother and introduce people to him. He will ask to hold him (and then hold him for about 30 seconds) and he talks to him. We ask him to help us by getting things like diapers, wipes, and Nolan’s pacifier.
I would say his listening skills have gone down a bit I think it is his way of getting attention. We’ve also had a few times where he was jealous (ie; he told Dan he couldn’t call Nolan “buddy” because Aiden is his buddy and one day he told me I could only take one of my boys to Target — which is something I used to do with Aiden every Sunday). We have not had any potty regression yet which I am very happy about.
I can’t wait to see what month two has in store for us. We have lots of firsts coming up in the next few weeks with a trip to visit family in Rhode Island and return to work for both me and Dan.
