How to take advantage of back to school shopping for toddlers

Back to school is right around the corner and it seems like all the stores are promoting back to school shopping. Even though my toddler is technically not going back to school I still love taking advantage of the deals and products around this time to stock up on art supplies, educational activities, lunch supplies and storage solutions!  I was browsing Target the other day and I picked up lots of things that Aiden will be able to use over the next year. Be sure to read to the end for a Target gift card giveaway!

Here is a roundup of the best back to school shopping for toddlers

Camelbak Water Bottles — The Camelbak Eddy Kids is my favorite water bottle for Aiden. It’s a perfect size, it doesn’t leak, and it’s durable. They are on sale for back to school so I picked up a couple. It’s also never a bad idea to get extra straws for these water bottles. Ours always seem to disappear!

Lunchbox — Aiden goes to homecare three days a week so we do pack a lunch for him. I find that we can get a good year out of the lunchbox but they tend to get pretty gross over time. That’s why I love picking up a new lunchbox at back to school time. The Cheeky insulated lunch bags at is a perfect size for toddler lunches. Back to school is also a great time to stock up on Bento boxes like this one, this one, and this set to fit inside the lunch bag.

Stickerkid labels — These labels aren’t from Target, but they are perfect for toddlers. For daycare, playdates, or even the grandparent’s house I label everything. They work on clothes, shoes, lunch boxes, bento boxes, cups, and water bottles — just about anything you can think of. This preschool starter pack is perfect and a great deal for all the labels you get.

Flashcards — I love using flashcards with Aiden. It’s an easy way to teach him basic concepts and they are super easy to throw in the diaper bag for downtime if we are out and about.  This pack of 360 flashcards covers many topics including shapes and colors, numbers, sight words, and same or different among others. The key with flashcards with young toddlers is to avoid putting pressure on your little one. If they don’t seem into it or get frustrated put them away and try again later.

Crayons, colored pencils, markers, watercolor paint — If you are a toddler mom you know all of these items are life. There are always great deals on these supplies during back to school season. Basically, anything by Crayola is great for little ones. I am planning on introducing scissor cutting to Aiden this year, so I snagged these blunt tip scissors for when we are ready to start that.

Pencil Case — With all the art supplies listed above, it’s inevitable that there are loose crayons, pencils, or markers hanging around. I picked up this cute shark pencil case so those stranded art supplies have a home!

Play-doh — I work from home and there are days when I have Aiden home while I work. If I have to get things done the one activity I know will entertain him relatively quietly without fail is Play-doh. When I saw this rainbow starter pack was on sale I took the opportunity to pick some up. I also spotted this shape and learn colors and shapes kit which is perfect for the little guy!

Storage Cubes — Back to school also means deals on dorm room supplies including storage. I love these fabric cube storage bins for just about everything.

Dollar Section of Target — I always browse the dollar section because there are always great inexpensive finds. With back to school as the theme, I was able to find doodle books, flashcards, and workbooks that are perfect for working in some educational time this upcoming year.

Hi, I’m Melissa! I am a mama to an energetic toddler, a wife to my amazing husband Dan, and I work full-time as a meeting planner. I started this blog because, after having my little guy, I quickly learned that exhaustion and baby brain causes you to forget some of the amazing (sometimes horrible and sometimes wonderful) details related to the first several months of raising a baby. Considering we may have more kids in the future, I want to document everything we do, so we remember what worked the first time around, and hopefully help other first time mamas along the way!
