The Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Woman at chiropractorOne of the best things I did during my pregnancy was go my chiropractor, Dr. Karl Petrie, regularly. Your body goes through so many changes and as things move around there can be lots of pain and discomfort. From nausea to sciatica to back pain, regular treatment from Dr. Petrie helped ease a lot of the pain of pregnancy — not to mention the added benefit of helping Aiden get in the correct position to prepare for birth. I am definitely not an expert (or doctor), I just know it worked really well for me, so I am excited that Dr. Petrie agreed to put together a short article to highlight the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy.

The Benefits of Utilizing Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

By Dr Karl Petrie D.C., C.S.C.S.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

There are no known contraindications to chiropractic care throughout pregnancy. All chiropractors are trained to work with women who are pregnant. Investing in the fertility and pregnancy wellness of women who are pregnant, or trying to conceive, is a routine treatment.

Why should I have chiropractic care during pregnancy?

During pregnancy, there are several physiological and endocrinological changes that occur in preparation for creating the environment for the developing baby. The following changes could result in a misaligned spine or joint: 1) Protruding abdomen and increased back curve 2) Pelvic changes 3) Postural adaptations.

Establishing pelvic balance and alignment is another reason to obtain chiropractic care during pregnancy. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery.

The nervous system is the master communication system to all the body systems including the reproductive system. Keeping the spine aligned helps the entire body work more effectively.

What are the benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy?

Potential benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy include: 1) Maintaining a healthier pregnancy. 2) Controlling symptoms of nausea. 3) Reducing the time of labor and delivery. 4) Relieving back, neck or joint pain. 5)Prevent a potential cesarean section.

Currently, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association recommends that women receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy to establish pelvic balance and optimize the room a baby has for development throughout pregnancy. With a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth, and the crisis and worry associated with breech and posterior presentations may be avoided altogether. Optimal baby positioning at the time of birth also eliminates the potential for dystocia (difficult labor) and therefore results in easier and safer deliveries for both the mother and baby.

Listed below are some interesting journal entries illustrating the great benefits we have discussed:

(Spinal manipulation of pregnant women in their second trimester increased the levator hiatal area at rest and thus appears to relax the pelvic floor muscles. This did not occur in the non-pregnant control participants, suggesting that it may be pregnancy related).

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24690125
(52% of 115 recruited patients ‘improved’ at 1 week, 70% at 1 month, 85% at 3 months, 90% at 6 months and 88% at 1 year. Category of previous LBP episodes number at one year (p = 0.02) was related to, improvement’ when analyzed alone, but was not strongly predictive in logistic regression. Patients with more prior LBP episodes had higher 1 year NRS scores (p = 0.013).

About Melissa

Hi, I’m Melissa! I am a mama to my baby Aiden Milo (born November 2015), and a police wife to my husband Dan. I started this blog because, after having Aiden, I quickly learned that exhaustion and baby brain causes you to forget some of the er-lovely (sometimes horrible and sometimes wonderful) details related to the first several months of raising a baby. Considering we may have more kids in the future, I want to document everything we do, so we remember what worked the first time around, and hopefully help other first time mamas along the way!
  • I went during my last pregnancy and it made such a difference in how i felt and the birth process! Great article.

    • Melissa

Right!? I totally agree. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  • I also have used chiropractic care while pregnant and it helped with my pain!

    • Melissa

Isn’t it the best? Thank you for sharing your experience.

  • Lauren

Thanks for sharing! I’m well into my second pregnancy and have been contemplating a chiropractor.

    • Melissa

You should do it! I started in my second trimester and kept going well into my third.

  • Erin Elizabeth

I never realized how beneficial seeing a chiropractor would be! Definitely making it a point to go when it’s time for baby #2! Thanks for sharing!

    • Melissa

I didn’t either! My husband started seeing Dr. Petrie while I was pregnant and he let us know all the benefits. I definitely recommend it for your next pregnancy!

  • I was always told to see a massage therapist to help relieve some of the tension on my back during my last pregnancy. I never did but I wish I would’ve thought to see a chiropractor.

    • Melissa

I did both! The massage was more for relaxation for me though. The chiropractor is great for lower back tension.

  • Justina Gholston

Awesome info. My main issue is back pain. I never thought of going to a chiropractor to help alleviate the pain. I may look into this.

    • Melissa

I really recommend it. It made a huge difference for me!

  • Emily Lindsey

Yes!! I received regular chiropractic care during my pregnancy and I think it really helped. It helped me manage discomfort as my body changed & helped with my hips. My labor & deivery went very smoothly & I was able to have a natural, unmedicated birth like I wanted. It was amazing and I give credit to chiropractic care & my doula & ALL the reading I did to prepare!! xx

    • Melissa

That’s awesome! I am glad it worked for you too 🙂

  • This is super interesting! I wouldn’t have thought of it but it makes perfect sense that it would be beneficial. I’m going through IVF next month, so if it’s successful I’ll have to give it a try!

    • Melissa

Good luck with your IVF, I hope it is successful! You should definitely give the chiropractor a shot.

  • Love this! I had chiropractic care with my twins and I absolutely loved it. Great post!

  • Chiropractic care was fantastic during pregnancy. I felt like a brand new woman every time she worked on me. i was even fortunate enough to get adjusted while in labor and it helped so much!

  • Tamara Goyette

I saw a chiropractor regularly when I was pregnant with my second child, I swear it made all the difference!

  • When I was pregnancy with my daughter Cataleya, I seen a chiropractor from 12 weeks to hours before birthing her. Best investment ever!

    Sharing My Birth Story

  • I just had our daughter at the end of July and SO wish I would have seen a chiropractor during the pregnancy. It would have made a huge difference, I think!

  • Would you say that seeing a chiropractor helped make your labor easier? I’ve been learning soooo much about chiropractic care lately, and am totally interested in it. With all the aches and pains I had during my pregnancy with my son, I KNOW I would have definitely benefited from seeing a chiropractor. Thanks for sharing this!! <3

    • Melissa

Hi Savannah, so the short answer is yes! I had a relatively easy labor, but a bit of a difficult delivery. I believe visiting the chiropractor definitely helped with the overall pregnancy pains and with the labor. I had an epidural which I regret doing. I think if I hadn’t had the epidural (I only did it because I thought it would help me sleep) I would have had a better chance of a natural birth (vs. c-section).
